Why should you trust us?

The Swank Guide has partnered with Booking.com and Tripadvisor to provide easy booking links for the hotels we recommend. Why? Because it ensures we can get you the lowest price, and it helps us continue to bring you empowering and entertaining content.

This new booking feature does not signal a change in our total editorial independence or in our status as a fully fan-supported business. Simply put: we have no financial relationship with any hotel or experience we recommend. We do not accept bags of cash, Dodgers tickets, sacrificial animals or blushing flatteries. The only way to get recommended by Swank is if we've tried it, loved it and would recommend it to our family and friends.

Swank you!

  • The Ion Adventure Hotel, Road 435 between Reykjavik and Nesjavellir (May-Sep), Road 36 from Mosfellsbaer and turn right towards Nesjavellir on road 360 (Oct-Apr), Iceland
  • Experience: Eco-Friendly
  • Sustainability kudos A Swank standout for Sustainability

The Ion Adventure Hotel may be Iceland’s most sustainable hotel. It started out as a power plant dorm, and there’s still a large geothermal power plant close to the hotel – but not so close that we found it annoying. The hotel’s about an hour outside Reykjavik next to the Thingvellir National Park and is close to the largest lake in Iceland.

The hotel’s in a pretty remote area – a great escape for seclusion and re-connecting with nature. If you’re looking for cafes and restaurants, though, this is probably not for you.

Transformed by LA-based architecture studio Minarc, the Ion is a world-class example of creative re-use of a bland building. No surprise, then, that the Ion has won a bunch of sustainability awards, including a 2014 award for Europe’s best sustainable boutique hotel. Locally-sourced lava, reused wood, Icelandic wool and other natural materials are used all over the hotel. Everything from the bed linen to the restaurant’s food is organic and fair-trade certified.
