Why should you trust us?

The Swank Guide has partnered with Booking.com and Tripadvisor to provide easy booking links for the hotels we recommend. Why? Because it ensures we can get you the lowest price, and it helps us continue to bring you empowering and entertaining content.

This new booking feature does not signal a change in our total editorial independence or in our status as a fully fan-supported business. Simply put: we have no financial relationship with any hotel or experience we recommend. We do not accept bags of cash, Dodgers tickets, sacrificial animals or blushing flatteries. The only way to get recommended by Swank is if we've tried it, loved it and would recommend it to our family and friends.

Swank you!

  • Good Hope Villas, Wakefield, Jamaica W.I.
  • Price guide: $$$$$
  • We loved: The faithful restoration of this British-era plantation: stone walls, plantation shutters, open ceilings, wood floors; the well-maintained gardens around the place; the two swimming pools, pottery studio within a 10-minute walk, and private beach within a 25-minute walk; the serene mornings of fog nuzzling the distant mountains, and the birdsong and sway of breeze in the trees in the immediate environs.

Is it a hotel, Airbnb, or something else? Here at the Swank Guide, we’re not sure. You can book a single room, or book the whole place. But please be aware that it is often booked out for retreats, so you’ll find good chunks of the year when there is no availability.

Good Hope is in the hills of Trelawny, Jamaica, 45 minutes from Montego Bay airport, at the entry of Jamaica’s famous Cockpit country. Swank was here for a retreat and all the food was provided as part of that. The Good Hope staff is wonderful and the food was excellent, but enquire with the hotel about how meals work if you are not part of a group.

You can stay in the Great House or the Carriage House which is steps below the Great House. There is also an individual building/room behind the Great House which I thought was the nicest room in the place.

Horseback ride, hike, explore the Cockpit country, learn pottery, or chill at one of the two pools available to guests. They also have their own private beach 20-30 min away with changing rooms, chairs, picnic tables and someone on hand to serve cold drinks.

This is the opposite of Jamaica’s mega-resorts. It was a true gem that we loved.
