The Last House sits just outside Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s south coast, where waves, wind, and color rule. Expect classic Bawa—open courtyards, bold yellows, and a sea breeze as your soundtrack. It’s small (just six rooms) and sometimes feels more like a friend’s beach house than a hotel—which is part of its charm, unless you’re unlucky with loud fellow guests.
No TVs, no gym, no pretense. The beach is gorgeous but not always safe for swimming year-round. Bring mosquito repellent and a good book; you’ll actually have time to read it.

Meals here feel more like visiting a local friend who just happens to have a private chef. Pre-order dinner a few hours ahead, choosing between a Western or Sri Lankan dish for each course. Expect colorful Sri Lankan curries, ultra-fresh seafood, and—thankfully—no breakfast buffet; you order off a menu, the civilized way. The dining setup is intentionally relaxed and entirely on your schedule. Don’t expect haute cuisine; do expect everything to be local. Menus change daily depending on what’s fresh, and vegetarian options are happily accommodated. There’s no bar scene, but a drinks service is available.
