Why should you trust us?

The Swank Guide has partnered with Booking.com and Tripadvisor to provide easy booking links for the hotels we recommend. Why? Because it ensures we can get you the lowest price, and it helps us continue to bring you empowering and entertaining content.

This new booking feature does not signal a change in our total editorial independence or in our status as a fully fan-supported business. Simply put: we have no financial relationship with any hotel or experience we recommend. We do not accept bags of cash, Dodgers tickets, sacrificial animals or blushing flatteries. The only way to get recommended by Swank is if we've tried it, loved it and would recommend it to our family and friends.

  • Lapa Rios Lodge, Puntarenas Province, Puerto Jiménez, Costa Rica
  • Price guide: $$$$$

Welcome to Costa Rica’s wild side at Lapa Rios Lodge on Costa Rica’s remote Osa Peninsula, where the rainforest meets the ocean, and your neighbors are monkeys, sloths, and toucans. Sounds like a dream, right?

Lapa Rios Lodge offers a unique blend of luxury and adventure. This eco-friendly lodge features 17 bungalows set high on a hill. You get great ocean views with a side of rainforest. Each bungalow is designed to immerse you in nature, with screened-in rooms, ceiling fans, and sea breezes ensuring comfort without the need for air conditioning – though two rooms do come with AC for those who need it.

Arriving at Lapa Rios is an adventure in itself, with a 6.5-hour drive from the capital of San José. The last 30 minutes are a bumpy ride down from Puerto Jiménez. Sana Air does fly from San Jose to Puerto Jiménez if you’d like an alternative to coming by car.

The lodge’s lobby, with its safari vibe, welcomes you with a refreshing towel and drink, though first impressions may vary.

Dining at Lapa Rios includes all meals in your room rate. The food is good, though the restaurant’s atmosphere could use some work, lacking ambiance and music. The bar near the pool, however, offers great views and a more relaxed setting, but the music, not so great.

Activities at Lapa Rios focus on exploring the jungle surroundings. From birdwatching to guided walks through the property, there’s plenty to keep you engaged. Additional off-property activities like zip-lining and beach trips are available at an extra cost.

Despite a few quirks, Lapa Rios Lodge provides an unforgettable experience, blending luxury with the raw beauty of Costa Rica’s wilderness and up-close experiences with a range of wildlife. Whether you’re here for the wildlife, the views, or simply to unwind, this lodge offers a unique escape.
