Mandarin Oriental Bangkok

A throwback to the golden era of travel, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok mixes 1960s glam with old-school service, epic river views, and just enough controversy to keep luxury travelers talking.

The Highs

Legendary service (most of the time)
Location doesn’t get better
Retro charm that’s one of a kind
Bamboo Bar’s still got it

Stuff You Should Know

You’re not just staying at a hotel—you’re entering a different era. That can feel magical or maddening, depending on your taste. Rooms are gorgeous but bathrooms are small. Restaurant décor feels like an afterthought, and non-guests have largely taken over the public spaces. The spa and the hotel’s Thai restaurant are across the river; easy to miss (but there is regular private boat service). The dress code is “strict” in theory but rarely enforced in practice. Still, with river views this good and service that folds your clothes at turn-down, you might just forgive the flaws—or at least be entertained by them.

Food + Drink On-site surprises

Eleven venues, Michelin stars, and some head-scratching design choices—plus a spa and Thai restaurant you’ll need a boat to reach.

There’s a lot of culinary firepower here: Lord Jim’s grill, classic French at Le Normandie, and traditional Thai dining at Sala Rim Naam—which requires a boat ride to the opposite bank. Ciao, the Italian riverside restaurant, delivers hits and misses (carbonara yes, ambiance no). High tea in the original colonial wing nails the nostalgic vibe, and the Bamboo Bar remains a Bangkok institution for cocktails and live jazz.
