Bali, the Island of the Gods, has been a staple of the travel industry for decades, attracting millions of tourists with what most people think are stunning beaches (not), and vibrant culture (is). But as someone who’s traveled to Bali five times for holidays, I have to say, Bali is not the ideal beach destination it’s often made out to be. In fact, it’s much better as a cultural destination.

Let’s start with the beaches. Don’t get me wrong, Bali has some nice stretches of sand. But, unfortunately, many of them are overrun with tourists and vendors, making it hard to truly relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. The water can also be quite murky and almost all beaches are polluted in most areas. Also, don’t expect long stretches of white sand beaches like you’d find in Tulum or many parts of Australia – those don’t exist in Bali. It’s mostly black sand, much of it with lots of garbage, or rocky.

What sets Bali apart from other beach destinations is its rich culture and history. From the ancient Hindu temples to the vibrant offerings and ceremonies, the island is steeped in tradition and spirituality. The Balinese are a deeply spiritual people, and their ceremonies and rituals are a window into their way of life and beliefs.

The island is also home to some of the world’s best food. From the traditional local dishes like nasi goreng and sate to the international cuisine, Bali is a foodie’s paradise. From street-side warungs to five-star restaurants, you can find everything here.

In addition to its cultural and culinary offerings, Bali is also a hub for yoga and wellness. With a thriving yoga scene and numerous spas and retreats, the island is a great place to unwind and rejuvenate.

While the beaches in Bali may not be the best, the island more than makes up for it with its rich cultural heritage, delicious food, and focus on wellness. If you’re looking for a true cultural experience, Bali is the perfect destination.

So, the next time you’re considering a beach vacation, think about Bali for its cultural richness instead. You won’t regret it.

My pro tip for Bali is to build in some beach time at the beginning or end of your trip, many of the better beaches are closer to the airport anyway; especially good if you arrive jet-lagged. We have some beach resorts to recommend that are some of the best in the world, but even at these places, it’s more about the view, the pool, and the settings, than it is about the beach.
